Dresden Guide 2026

Dresden is a city of art and baroque architecture on the Elbe river in Saxony, eastern Germany. Its historic centre, heavily damaged in the Second World War, was rebuilt, and visitors today come for buildings such as the Frauenkirche and the Zwinger.

What to see in Dresden

  • The Frauenkirche: the church with a baroque dome that has become the city's symbol.
  • The Zwinger Palace: a baroque palace complex with gardens and museums.
  • The Semperoper: the opera house close to the Elbe.
  • The Brühl Terrace: a viewing terrace running along the river.

When to go

July and August average a high of 24 degrees. January ranges from 4 to 0 degrees. March is the driest month with 45 millimetres, and June and August get 89. In summer the riverbank is good for walking; winter is cold but the museums are open.
