Heidelberg Guide 2026
Heidelberg is a university city on the Neckar river in south-west Germany. With a ruined castle on the hill, a stone bridge over the river and a baroque old town, it is one of the most photographed towns in the country.
What to see in Heidelberg
- Heidelberg Castle: a partly ruined castle on the hill, looking down on the old town.
- The Old Bridge (Alte Brücke): the stone bridge across the Neckar.
- Hauptstraße: a long pedestrian street through the old town, lined with cafes and shops.
- Heidelberg University: founded in 1386, the oldest university in Germany.
When to go
July and August average a high of 27 degrees. March is the driest month, with 55 millimetres of rain. January averages 6 degrees by day and 1 at night. From late April to September the riverbank and the castle gardens are easy to enjoy.
Getting there from Turkey
