About this experience
In the forested interior of the Riviera Maya, where the limestone ground has collapsed, clear underground pools known as cenotes can be found. Light filters through openings and the rocks under the water take on a blue-green tone. A short swim in the cool water makes a good break on the Yucatán peninsula.
Entry to the water can be by stairs or a rocky descent, and non-slip or water shoes help. Bring swimwear, a towel and biodegradable sunscreen. Ease into the cool water. To protect the natural water, you may be asked to rinse off lotions first.
