Swimming in a sacred Mayan cenote sinkhole

Near Valladolid, a cenote sacred to the Maya greets you with roots hanging from the cave roof and crystal-clear water. Light falling through the opening above turns the water pale blue. Swimming here gives a sense of what water meant in the Maya world.

There may be steps down to the water, so non-slip shoes help. Pack swimwear and a towel. To protect the water, avoid applying sunscreen or repellent before swimming, as you may be asked to rinse. Light through the opening is usually best around midday.
