Kok Tobe is a green hill rising above Almaty. From the top the city looks spread across a basin, with the snowy Tian Shan ranges behind and avenues and parks in front. It is a good place to wander the viewpoint, take photographs and grasp the scale of the city at a glance.
The hilltop can be breezy, so a light jacket is enough. Cloud or haze can erase the city, which is why choosing a clear hour changes the photograph. Towards evening, when city lights begin to come on, the view turns completely different. It is a spring to autumn stop and an easy one with small children.
