On a mountainside near Almaty, a cable car lifts you to 2,260 metres. As you rise the pine forest falls away and the snowy ranges of the Tian Shan open up. The air is thin and cool at the top, and the valley below looks like a small carpet. A few slow minutes are enough to take it in.
It is cool and windy up high even when the city is warm, so bring a coat and hat. The altitude can cause mild light-headedness for some, so move slowly and drink water. A clear morning shows the ranges at their sharpest. The ride is easy with small children.
