MBD Travel Girona Guide
More than a list of sights: a practical guide to planning the order of your trip, choosing where to stay and adapting the plan to the season.
Girona Guide 2026
Girona is a mid-sized city in Catalonia, in north-east Spain, on the Onyar river. Its coloured houses along the water, medieval walls and narrow Jewish quarter make it an easy stop from Barcelona.
What to see in Girona
- The coloured houses on the Onyar: the city's best-known view, photographed from the bridges.
- The cathedral: a wide Gothic nave and a long staircase above the old town.
- The Jewish Quarter (El Call): narrow medieval lanes.
- The city walls: you can walk along the top of the walls around the old town.
When to go
July and August average a high of 31 degrees, and July is the driest month with 27 millimetres of rain. January ranges from 13 to 4 degrees, so winters are mild. May and September are easier for walking when the heat is not heavy.
Getting there from Turkey
Girona is part of MBD's Barcelona and architectural wonders tours. These leave from Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir, run 3 nights, and list Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, SunExpress and Ajet. It also appears in the seven-night Spain and Andalusia tours. In the programmes, Girona, Figueres and the Dalí Museum share one day. Dates and prices are on the tour page.
Who it suits
People who like compact, walkable cities, art and architecture fans, and anyone who wants a day away from Barcelona. It is not a beach resort.
