Underground descent to Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral
Bogota · Colombia
About this experience
A path leads down into an old salt mine at Zipaquirá, reaching a cathedral 180 metres underground. Crosses carved from rock, dim lighting and echoing halls give the walk through the salt a calm, striking atmosphere. It is cool and quiet below the surface.
Underground the air is cool and damp, so bring a thin sweater and shoes with grip. If enclosed, narrow spaces make you uneasy, bear that in mind beforehand. The descent slopes down, so take it slowly if you tire easily. Lighting is dim, so try your phone's night mode for photographs.
