Beneath Santa Cruz, long tunnels formed by ancient volcanic flows run underground. Inside you meet cool, dim air, lava marks on the ceiling and passages that narrow here and there. Reading the island's volcanic origins from below, step by step, is a rare opportunity.
The floor is uneven and some stretches are low and narrow. Bring a torch or headlamp, sturdy closed shoes and a light top layer. If you feel uneasy in tight spaces, consider that beforehand, and watch your head.
