Gate of the Sun and monolith statues at Tiahuanaco ruins
La Paz · Bolivia
About this experience
Near La Paz, Tiahuanaco is an ancient settlement left behind by one of the Andean civilisations. You study the carved surface of the Gate of the Sun, the standing stone statues and the huge stone blocks up close. Even without a guide's commentary, the scale and silence of the place leave an impression.
The site is open, the ground uneven and the altitude high. Shade is scarce, so bring a hat and sun protection, plus a light jacket for wind and cold. Walk slowly and drink water.
