Witnessing Margerie Glacier calving from the cruise deck

Juneau · United States

The experience

About this experience

Margerie Glacier in Glacier Bay National Park is 34 kilometres long and rises 76 metres at its face. The ship stops in front of it, and the deck goes quiet.

Then comes a rumble like a dynamite blast, but deeper and heavier, and a huge slab of ice breaks from the front and drops into the sea. This is called calving. It is not scheduled, so patience is part of the experience.
