Choosing a Maldives honeymoon hotel starts with one question: an island resort, a hotel on Hulhumalé next to the airport, or a city hotel in the capital, Malé. MBD Travel sells five Maldives hotels today: the 5-star Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa on Furanafushi Island, the 4-star Hotel Ocean Grand and Vista Beach Retreat on Hulhumalé, and JEN Maldives Malé by Shangri-La and The Somerset Hotel in Malé. If you want to spend the whole honeymoon on a resort island, the Sheraton is the one on this list. The other four work as a transit night or a way to split the budget. This guide compares all five using the details on their live hotel pages. Current nightly rates are on each hotel's own page.

Why Maldives geography decides the hotel

According to Visit Maldives, the country's official tourism site, the Maldives is made up of 1,192 islands. They form a double chain of 26 atolls stretching 871 kilometres. Including the sea, the country covers about 90,000 square kilometres, but only 298 of them are dry land. Only 200 islands are inhabited; a few on each atoll are run as resorts and some are used for industry and agriculture.

That shapes how you arrive. Visit Maldives says speedboat transfers are the norm for resorts close to Velana International Airport, while islands further out are reached by seaplane or an internal flight. Before you pick a room, check how you will get from the airport to the island.

Three different kinds of Maldives stay

The five hotels on MBD Travel fall into three groups: a resort on its own island, hotels on Hulhumalé, the reclaimed island northeast of Malé, and city hotels in central Malé. Each serves a different purpose, and it is worth knowing which one you are looking at before booking a honeymoon.

An island resort in Furanafushi: Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa

Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa is a 5-star resort on the ocean shore of Furanafushi Island in Kaafu (North Malé) Atoll. Its hotel page puts it 0.1 kilometres from Full Moon Beach and 0.2 kilometres from Thulhagiri Beach. The resort has 176 rooms, each with a private balcony or veranda and a separate bathtub and shower.

The resort has several restaurants, a beach bar and poolside bars. Guests can use the outdoor pools and the private beach, and the spa offers massages, body treatments and facials. A kids' club and a playroom are also on site. Velana International Airport is 6.7 kilometres away in a straight line; the transfer runs over water, not by road. As the page itself notes, which services cost extra is confirmed against the package you choose.

Two options on Hulhumalé: close to the airport, easy on the budget

Hulhumalé is an island reclaimed from the sea northeast of Malé, just north of Hulhulé, the island that holds Velana International Airport. Two 4-star hotels are sold here, Hotel Ocean Grand and Vista Beach Retreat, neighbours on Kaani Magu.

  • Hotel Ocean Grand: 0.7 kilometres from Hulhumale Beach, 0.8 from Hulhumalé Central Park and 1.5 from Kurumba Beach. A restaurant, lift and bicycle rental are listed.
  • Vista Beach Retreat: 0.7 kilometres from the same beach and 0.8 from the central park, with a restaurant, cafeteria and room service.

Neither is a resort island. They are simple hotels within walking distance of the town beach, useful for a short transit night or for couples who want to split the budget and put part of it towards a resort island.

Two city hotels in Malé

Malé, the capital, sits on the island at the southern tip of Kaafu (North Malé) Atoll. JEN Maldives Malé by Shangri-La is a 4-star hotel here, listed as a city-centre, meeting and business hotel. It is 0.2 kilometres from the People's Majlis and Mulee Aage Palace and 0.3 kilometres from Republic Square, with a kids' club among its facilities.

The Somerset Hotel, also 4-star, is in Malé's historic centre, 0.1 kilometres from the National Museum and 0.2 kilometres from the Grand Friday Mosque and Sultan Park. Neither is built for a honeymoon on its own; both are practical when a seaplane connection falls on an overnight schedule or when you need a short stop in Malé.

When to go to the Maldives

Visit Maldives describes a hot tropical climate all year, with an average high of 31.5 and an average low of 26.4 degrees. The southwest monsoon from May to October brings rain, while the northeast monsoon from November to April is generally sunny. Local time is GMT+5, two hours ahead of Turkey.

One more route: the all-inclusive honeymoon request

MBD Travel also runs a request page for an all-inclusive Maldives honeymoon: flights, inter-island transfer, accommodation and meals in one quote. It is not a fixed package; you leave your dates and number of nights, and the sales team returns with a tailored offer.

Whichever hotel you choose, you can compare the Maldives further through our island and beach holiday categories or the country guide.

What is the difference between an island resort and Hulhumalé?

An island resort, such as Furanafushi, is reached over water by speedboat or seaplane and hosts guests of a single property. Hulhumalé is land reclaimed from the sea north of the airport, with several hotels and a resident community; it has a walkable town beach but not resort seclusion.

Which MBD Travel hotel in the Maldives suits a honeymoon?

Of the five hotels sold on the site, only Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa sits on its own resort island. The two Hulhumalé hotels and the two Malé hotels are better suited to transit nights or to splitting a budget.

When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

According to Visit Maldives, the northeast monsoon from November to April is generally sunny, while the southwest monsoon from May to October brings rain. Average temperatures stay between 26 and 31 degrees all year.

How do you get from the airport to a resort island?

Visit Maldives says speedboat transfers are the norm for resorts close to the international airport, with seaplanes or internal flights for islands further out. Sheraton Maldives Full Moon is 6.7 kilometres from the airport in a straight line.

Is there a fixed all-inclusive Maldives package?

Instead of a fixed-price package there is a request page: you leave your dates and number of nights, and the sales team prepares a tailored quote covering flights, transfer, accommodation and meals.
