Game drive across the red-earth savannah in Tsavo East National Park

The red earth of Tsavo East gives the savannah and acacia trees an orange base. As the safari vehicle rolls along wide tracks, elephants, zebras and antelope appear among the scrub. Elephants stained red by the soil are a scene the park is known for.

Tracks are dusty and bumpy, and earth-toned clothing hides the dust. Bring binoculars, sunscreen and plenty of water; at midday animals seek shade, so early morning and late afternoon can be more productive. Stay seated in the vehicle and wait for the guide's signal.
