Porta Nigra and ancient Roman heritage in Trier
Trier · Germany
About this experience
In the centre of Trier, Porta Nigra rises as a vast Roman city gate in darkened sandstone. Close up, you can see how the blocks were fitted without mortar and how the arches and towers have withstood the centuries. The streets around it lead on to other traces of the city's Roman past.
Choose comfortable shoes for the cobbles. Afternoon light gives the sandstone a warmer tone. Walk slowly around the gate: the stonework and the marks of time read better from up close.
