Kathmandu Valley panoramic view from Swayambhunath Monkey Temple

Kathmandu · Nepal

The experience

About this experience

On a hill overlooking the Kathmandu Valley, the Swayambhunath Temple rises with a golden spire and Buddhist symbols. Monkeys roaming the grounds earned it the name Monkey Temple. Climbing the stairs and looking out over the valley, among prayer flags and robed visitors, is a calm moment.

The climb has many steps. Monkeys may snatch food, so keep your bag closed and avoid eye contact with them. Wear comfortable shoes. Covered shoulders and knees show respect at the temple. In clear weather the valley view is much sharper.
