At Sigiriya, a giant rock rises above the forest, and you climb it to the ancient fortress ruins on top. Stairways and metal platforms lead upward, and at the summit green plains and the horizon open out. It is a step-by-step ascent to one of Sri Lanka's best-known historic sites.
Starting early helps avoid the heat. Bring water, a hat, sun cream and shoes with good grip. Crowds can cause waits on the narrow sections.
