Ancient rock-hewn cave dwellings tour in Sassi di Matera
Bari · Italy
About this experience
The Sassi district of Matera is a historic settlement of cave homes carved into rock. Stairways, narrow passages and houses stacked up the slope show a way of life that goes back for centuries. Seen from above, the stone-clad hillside drops into a deep ravine.
Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, carry water and take the climbs slowly. Light near sunset changes the colour of the stone.
