Away from the lights of Naryan-Mar, you head out into the dark tundra. If the sky is clear, faint green bands of aurora ripple over the horizon, with nothing around but snow, wind and silence. Patience is rewarded for those who can wait.
The aurora depends on weather and sky conditions and cannot be guaranteed. A tripod and spare battery help with photos. It takes place in winter: pack thermal layers, heavy boots, gloves and a hat, and be ready for a long wait on your feet.
