In Kyrgyzstan, the Burana Tower is one of the structures left by Balasagun, a city of the Karakhanid era. A brick tower rises on an open plain, seen together with the remains of the surrounding archaeological site and stone figures in an open-air display. It is a quiet walk through the Turkic history of Central Asia.
The site is open with little shade, so bring a hat, water and sunscreen. A light jacket helps if the wind rises. Leave time to look closely at the details of the stone figures and the tower. A guide's commentary makes clear which city the remains belonged to.
