Giethoorn Guide 2026
Giethoorn is a small village in Overijssel, in the north-east of the Netherlands, where canals take the place of streets. Thatched farmhouses and wooden bridges have made it one of the best-known fairy-tale villages in the country.
What to do in Giethoorn
- A canal trip: water is the village's main transport, and small quiet boats go through the canals.
- Thatched houses: farmhouses and gardens lined along the canal bank.
- Wooden bridges: they link the village's footpaths.
- Walking and cycling: there are routes around the lake and reed beds outside the village.
When to go
July and August average a high of 22 degrees. January ranges from 6 to 2 degrees. October is the wettest month with 118 millimetres, and March the driest with 55. The village is liveliest in spring and summer, and quiet and misty in winter.
Getting there from Turkey
In MBD tours, Giethoorn appears as the "fairy-tale villages of the Netherlands" and "windmills and canal villages" days, and it is visited together with Zaanse Schans. Benelux, France and Germany tours run 6 to 7 nights, and Amsterdam tours 3 to 4 nights, leaving from Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya and Adana. Dates and prices are on the tour page.
Who it suits
Nature lovers, people who like quiet villages and photography, families and couples. MBD lists no hotel in the village, so plan it as a day visit, not an overnight stay.
