This hotel is super close to the main train station, and a 20 minute tram / 35 minute walk to the centre bit of town. The team at the front desk are very friendly and take time to explain how to access the city easily and efficiently. The room is well appointed and very clean and tidy with a nice open-plan feel to it. The soundproofing is, however, very bad - you can hear every time the lift moves or whenever your neighbours (next door or floor below) open or close a door or sneeze or... Anything. Just make the doors thicker and better sealed, please. The bed is not suitable for a solo traveller. It's two mattresses with a mattress topper, which will trick you into thinking it's comfortable - but you'll awake with a bad back having fallen down the hole between two pushed-together beds. For me, temperature is a critical part of sleep, and the Aircon here works well, but takes a while (3hrs+) to reach the correct temperature. I finally got the temperature where I wanted it on night one, but unfortunately housekeeping turned it off and night two sleep was damaged as a result. Whilst I understand the eco-issue, this should not happen if a hotel doesnt offer high-power cooling to get temperatures met within 5 mins of getting into the room. If a guest has set a temperature, please leave it there! It's all reasonable value for money, and the breakfast is really great produce and very tasty

Perfect experience. Super friendly and very helpful staff. Nice big room with everything needed. Very quiet and comfortable. Great location. Amazing breakfast with freshly cooked eggs and great choices. Everyone went out of their way to provide a gluten free option for us. Highly recommended.

Loved this little hotel. Nice and cozy. Much bigger rooms than expected. Comfortable, lots of amenities, and the staff were a delight. Half hour walk into town. Highly recommend this place if you want to spend a few nights in Gent. Thank you.

Lift bridge and willow-lined canal in Ghent

Ghent (Gent in Dutch) is a medieval city in Flanders, Belgium, where the Leie and Scheldt rivers meet. It offers canals, a castle and historic facades in a more relaxed setting than crowded Bruges.

More about the city

What to see in Ghent

  • Gravensteen: a medieval castle with a moat, in the middle of the city.
  • Graslei and Korenlei: rows of historic guild houses on either side of the river.
  • Saint Bavo's Cathedral: home to the Ghent Altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers.
  • The Belfry: a medieval bell tower rising above the old town.

When to go

July and August average a high of 24 to 25 degrees. January ranges from 7 to 2 degrees. February and April are the driest months, with 58 millimetres, but winter is grey. From May to September the canal banks are the most pleasant for walking.

Getting there from Turkey

In MBD tours, Ghent is visited on the "Bruges, Ghent and Brussels" day. The Benelux, France and Germany tours run 6 to 7 nights, and they leave from Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara, Adana and Antalya, listing Turkish Airlines and SunExpress. It also appears in the 3 to 4 night Amsterdam tours. Dates and prices are on the tour page.

Who it suits

Visitors who want Belgian history in a short time, and those who like canal walks and architecture. It is not the main stop for shopping or the sea.

Questions people ask

Ghent or Bruges? The programmes put both on the same day. Ghent is less touristy, and Bruges is smaller and busier.

Where can I stay? MBD lists Sandton Grand Hotel Reylof and NH Gent Sint Pieters as 4-star, Novotel Gent Centrum and Carlton as 3-star, and Ibis Centrum Opera Gent as 2-star.
