Examine the Bilge Khagan and Kul Tigin steles at the Orkhon Inscriptions
Ulaanbaatar · Mongolia
About this experience
In the Orkhon Valley stand eighth-century inscriptions raised for Bilge Khagan and Kul Tigin, among the oldest known written texts in Turkic. The lettering on the stone monuments and the wide steppe landscape are seen together. Touching the roots of a language on site is a strong moment for history lovers.
The journey can be long, and the site is open with little shade. Bring a hat, water and sunscreen, and a light jacket for the wind. Do not touch the inscriptions, and follow the guide. This visit runs in spring, summer and autumn, and reading about the inscriptions beforehand makes the encounter richer.
