At Bom Jesus do Monte near Braga, a monumental zigzag staircase climbs the hillside step by step. Fountains, statues and trees line the route like stage scenery, with the church and a wide view over the city waiting at the top. The climb is both a pilgrim route and a good walk.
There are many steps, so pace yourself. Take rest stops and bring comfortable shoes and water. Stones can be slippery in the rain. Anyone who prefers not to climb all the way can walk just part of it.
